Where is Ophthalmic Ward
Ophthalmic Ward can be found on the 3rd floor of the Blue Block. It is easier to reach this ward from the Day Care Unit entrance rather than the hospital's main entrance. Portering services are available, if required, from both hospital entrances.
 
What is Ophthalmic Ward?
Ophthalmic Ward is a 10 bedded mixed ward, that caters for patients with acute ophthalmic conditions (either for treatment or surgery), and Day Case surgery. The main Ophthalmic procedures include cataract surgery, glaucoma, vitreous haemorrhages and retinal detachments. There are other Ophthalmic surgical procedures done like Squints and other minor procedures.
At the Ophthalmic ward, patients are assessed prior to surgery by a multi disciplinary team. Verbal and written information about the specific surgery and post operative care is given to the patient.
There are 8 consultants in this ward – Mr M. Vella (Chairman of Dept),Mr T. Fenech, Mr F. Mercieca, Mr M. Gouder, Mr J. Janula, Mr J Grech Hardie, Mr F.Carbonaro and Mr W. Gualtieri.Each consultant has a senior doctor assigned to the firm,to assist in the care of patients.

Who will look after me?
A team of nurses managed by a Charge Nurse and Deputy Charge Nurse, together nursing aides and domestic staff will care for the patients whilst in ward.

Meal times
Patients have the opportunity to order their lunch and dinner from a menu, provided by the hospital caterer. A staff member will go around in the morning to take these orders. Food ordered will be for the following day. Should a patient require a ‘special’ diet due to some condition, the staff must be informed, so that arrangements can be made to meet the requirement.
Note: Food is served to in-patients only. Daycase patients are advised to bring a light snack, as operation list waiting times vary.
 
Breakfast: 7.30am to 8am
Lunch: 11.30am to 12.30pm
Dinner: 5.30pm to 6.30pm
 
Visiting times
Official visiting times are:
Monday to Sunday (including public holidays):
11:30 to 13:00 (2 visitors at any one time)
15:00 to 20:00 (2 visitors at any one time)
 
Special permits for visiting outside the established visiting hours may be given to relatives on the discretion of the Charge Nurse or Deputy Charge Nurse.

Contacting the ward
To speak to the nurses on the ward, one may call on 2545 5020.
 
Note:Nurses may provide guidance with regards to Ophthalmic Procedures, but other medical information cannot be given over the phone as per patient’s privacy and hospital policy.
Relatives may contact patients directly (and vice versa) by using the phone services of the bedside entertainment system provided near each patient’s beds.
