Sports and Exercise

As from the 23rd March 2016 a new clinic addressing Sports and Exercise Medicine has been set up within Primary Health Care.
 
Initially this clinic will start in two Health Centres namely Qormi and Birkirkara. General Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals (Physiotherapy) working within Primary Health Care can refer patients with the following sports and exercise medical conditions:
  • Tendon injuries such as patellar tendinosis, supraspinatis tendinosis and Achilles tendinopathies;
  • Enthesopathies in young athletes;
  • Ligamentous injuries not requiring surgery : Grade II ATFL lesion in the ankle and Knee collateral ligament injuries;
  • Acute grade II muscle tears such as an acute quadriceps or gastrocnemius tear;
  • Debilitating groin strain;
  • Acute shin pain caused by an increased training load;
  • Elbow epicondylitis;
  • Plantar fasciitis.
 
This clinic which is an appointment clinic will initially be held every Wednesday morning alternating between Qormi and B’kara Health Centres. Patients from Cospicua Paola and Floriana should be referred to Qormi Health centre and those from Mosta, Rabat and Gzira Health Centres to Birkirkara Health Centre.
 
 
Referral to this clinic is by utilizing the standard Ticket of Referral and asking patients to phone for the appropriate appointment at the respective clinic. In situations where patients may require an earlier appointment the respective clinician has to discuss with the attending Consultant for possible same day consultation.
