Well Baby Clinic

Doctors from the Primary Child Health and Immunisation Unit carry out Well Baby Clinics in all Health Centres on a daily basis according to a fixed timetable. Mothers who deliver their babies at Mater Dei Hospital are invited to bring their baby to the Well Baby Clinic by appointment. These clinics serve the purpose of clinical examinations and developmental assessments for babies between the ages of 6 weeks and 18 months. Three routine visits are carried out at 6 weeks, 8 months and 18 months respectively. This service is also offered to babies born in private hospitals or at home and in this case, parents are requested to phone the Health Centre in their area for details of the day when Well Baby Clinic is held in that Centre. Appointments can be made by phone with the Clinic nurse.

Youth Health

This is a recent addition to the Primary Child Health Unit. The Youth Health section is an extension of the School Health Service into Secondary Schools. The services offered are screening for scoliosis in students who are in Form 2 in State and Church Schools, and Immunisation of Form 4 students with the booster dose of diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccine.

Scoliosis Review Clinic

This clinic takes place at Floriana Health Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon. Referrals to this clinic are made by doctors from the School Health Service following scoliosis screening in schools, as well as by doctors from Health Centres or private practice. The GPs running the clinic monitor children and adolescents with mild scoliosis on a regular basis and offer advice and treatment for the condition.

National Immunisation Service

The National Immunisation Service is responsible for the administration of all vaccines given to the public at all ages. The Immunisation Unit at Floriana Health Centre co-ordinates all vaccinations given from each health centre as well as some services given in the community and hospitals. All clinics in the health centres carry out the scheduled vaccinations for infants, children and adolescents. The scheduled vaccines for infants and children up to 16years are free of charge. Persons at high risk of certain vaccine-preventable diseases are also vaccinated free of charge and these include persons in particular occupations. The Immunisation Unit in Floriana also offers a travel vaccine advisory service as well as the actual administration of travel vaccines. Vaccines required prior to travel to some countries are given against payment. The clinic also supplies vaccines which are not available from retail pharmacies against payment for use by general practitioners in private practice and provides immunisation service related to occupational health to various Government Departments and Agencies as well as to private enterprise.
