Burns Unit

Where is the Burns Unit?

The Burns Unit is located at the yellow block on the third floor.

What is the Burns Unit?

The Burns Unit is a 5 bedded mixed unit that provides specialized care to patients who have sustained burns. Patients are admitted directly from the Admitting and Emergency Department post burn injury and can also be referred from the Health Centres. It is amalgamated to the Plastics Unit and they share the same staff.

Who will look after me?

A team of nurses managed by Ms. Charmaine Farrugia Camileri and Mr Mario Grech will care for the patient whilst in the ward.

The Plastic Surgeons who may have patients in this ward are Mr. Briffa and Mr. Darmanin, who will visit the patients daily.

Meal times

Like all patients in Mater Dei Hospital, patients have the opportunity of ordering their lunch and dinner from an established menu. A staff member will go around the patients in the morning, so the order is taken. The food that will be ordered will be for the next day.

    • Breakfast: 7.30am to 8am
  • Lunch: 11.30am to 12.30pm
  • Dinner: 5.30pm to 6.30pm

Visiting times

Monday to Sunday (including public holidays):

  • 11:30 to 12:30 (2 visitors at any one time)
  • 17:00 to 18:00 (2 visitors at any one time

No special permits are allowed for visiting outside the established visiting hours except in special circumstances given to relatives at the discretion of the Charge Nurse.

The reason for these strict visiting hours and procedures is to prevent the contraction of infection, which is harmful to the sick patient, and thus special measures are taken to safeguard the health of the patient.
