Ophthalmic Outpatients

Location

The Department of Ophthalmology can be found on the ground floor of the Outpatients Block, directly opposite the Pharmacy Department.

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 07.00hrs to 14.15hrs
Wednesday and Friday from 07.00hrs to 15.45hrs
Saturday from 07.00hrs to 12.00hrs.

The Department of Ophthalmology is managed by the Director, Mr. Mario Vella.

The nursing and clerical team is managed by Charge Nurse Ms. Antonia Azzopardi, assisted by Deputy Nursing Officer Ms. Josette Mejlak, whose job is to assure that the services offered are delivered efficiently and in the patient’s best interest.
The Department also includes the Orthoptics Clinic which is managed by Mr. Martin Francalanza and Ms. Celine Pace, who specialise in cases of, Strabismus-Squints, Amblyopia, Double Vision, Low Vision Aid and Visual Field Testing.
Ms. Anabel Grech offers Optometry services, which is the examination for vision correction with the assistance of spectacles. This service is only offered to patients that have undergone cataract surgery.
Mr. Mark Bugeja offers Ocular Prosthesis services for those persons who require an artificial eye.

Making an appointment

New Case appointment: A referral is required from the family GP or a doctor in the Health Centres. The referral is to be posted to or by hand, left at the Main Reception, Mater Dei Hospital.
Urgent Cases: Patents must first call at the Emergency Department, and then examined at the Casualty Eye Clinic within the Ophthalmic Outpatients (Mondays to Fridays – 08:00 to 13:00 and Saturdays - 08:00 to 11:00) and outside these hours at the Ophthalmic Ward (Blue 3rd floor).
Follow-up appointment: These are booked at the Ophthalmic Outpatients Department reception after your visit.

If a patient cannot attend for an appointment, s/he is to advise the department concerned and come to the Department for an alternative appointment. If the patient is unable to come personally, the appointment card may be sent to the department by post. No appointments are given over the phone.
If hospital transport is required to attend for an appointment, it can ONLY be booked with the Doctor’s approval.

Important Notifications

Appointments for eye examinations (refraction) are only made for patients who have undergone a cataract operation. When requesting for free spectacles for those with entitlement for free treatment by Social Security Department, clients must present a photocopy of the original form for ‘Entitlement for Free Treatment’ (Pink Form).
Patients should always be accompanied. They may be unable to drive back especially if the application of certain eye drops is required during the visit.
Dark sunglasses should be worn after the application of these eye drops as the eye will be sensitive to strong light.
The Yellow Card (Schedule V) should be brought along for every visit as there may be changes to the current medication or a new treatment may be prescribed. This card is issued only to patients who suffer from glaucoma and is for an indefinite period.
Information regarding the Cataracts list will ONLY be provided to patients, or their relatives, on presentation of the patient’s ID Card.
