Back Office Process

A referral for a hearing aid usually occurs after the ENT or Audiovestibular Consultant has ruled out any other medical or surgical treatment option for the cause of a hearing loss. A person referred for a hearing aid will be given an appointment by the Audiology Unit so that the necessary impression of the ear can be taken so that the hearing aid will be ordered. A request form together with a copy of the Pink From will be sent to the entitlement unit within the health ministry. When the approval is given and the mould is received an appointment will be sent out so that the person will be fitted with the hearing aid. This appointment is not simply an appointment to collect the hearing aid but also an assessment as the hearing aid needs to be set and adjusted according to a person’s hearing threshold. The user will then be counselled appropriately. A follow up appointment will be scheduled to monitor progress with the hearing aid and take care of difficulties the user may have. We also offer a hearing aid repair service where patients may contact the audiology unit and schedule an appointment so that the hearing aid can be checked by our Audiology Lab Technician. If this will take some time a replacement will be given until the hearing aid is repaired.
Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What causes hearing loss?
Answer: There are many factors that can cause hearing loss. 50% of hearing loss is genetic and the other 50% is due to environmental factors for example: Age, Trauma, Ototoxicity (drugs, solvents, smoking), infections during pregnancy ( T.O.R.C.H), Noise, Ear infections, Wax, Middle ear infections, Tumours and many other factors.
Question: Do hearing aids restore hearing?
Answer: A hearing aid is an electronic and sophisticated device that helps to improve hearing but cannot restore hearing completely as the nerve is still damaged. It is important to use a hearing aid if there is a hearing loss as recent studies show that hearing loss is an independent cause of early dementia as the brain is not stimulated properly.
Question: What technology is available to improve hearing?
Answer: Hearing aids are most commonly used however persons who have a profound hearing loss can be fitted with a cochlear implant following an evaluation to assess eligibility. Bone anchored hearing aids are other devices that can be used on persons who have a dead ear and normal hearing in the other or chronic middle ear problems in both ears.
Question: Do I need a referral every time I need to have my device checked or if I have a problem?
Answer: No. An individual who has a problem with the device or needs it checked can simply phone for an appointment.
