Description
Dental Technology Services include prosthetics in the provision of dentures, full or partial, their repair and any other alteration. Orthodontic services refers to appliances which correct tooth positions to improve occlusion, function, aesthetics and other complicated jaw relations. Specialised services in Maxillo Facial reconstruction of traumatised and diseased patients (genetically or diagnosed with a medical condition) are also provided. These involve facial reconstruction and obturators. Patients requiring orthognatic appliances (specialised/complex orthodontic appliances)are also provided.
The dental technologist is an Allied Health Care Professional who designs, constructs, repairs or adjusts dental custom-made appliances. These devices serve to preserve oral tissue and enhance a patient’s ability to eat and smile. Dental Technologists form part of the dental team. Together with the Clinician/dentist they strive to produce the best possible solutions for a patients aesthetic and functional requirements.
Procedure
The Person who fulfils the eligibility criteria to benefit from these services can be referred by a Consultant within the Department of Health or by his/her family clinican/dentist.
Eligibility
All Maltese citizens or foreigners holding a residency permit can be referred to benefit from Prosthetics services. For the provision of orthodontic appliances, all under 16 adolescence referred by a Clinician are entitled to receive orthodontic appliances if needed.

Back Office Process
The Department of dental Surgery (MDH level -1) receives referrals which have been screened for this service. They are than given appointments for the initiating process of our services, by mail or telephone. Priority is given to emergency cases. All patient details are kept on a computer system and the number of times an appointment is given to an individual is also recorded.
The Clinicians also document the details of each consultation and kept in the patients’ records. At the first consultation a patient is assessed, prescribed the most appropriate device and all necessary measurements are taken. The device is then ordered and manufactured at MDH dental lab. Another appointment is then given to the patient for the fitting and/or delivery of the device. Follow up, post-delivery appointments are given according to each patient’s individual need.

Answer: No. An individual who has a problem with the device or needs it checked can simply phone for an appointment.
