The Nursing
Services Directorate is responsible for over 3,500 nurses and midwives
employed within the National Health Services. These nurses and midwives are employed
across the various institutions owned by the government. Further information on

Primary Health Care
Primary Health Care services are offered from 8
main Health Centres across Malta and Gozo and several local clinics. Further information

Secondary and
Tertiary Care
In patient care is provided through 5 main
public hospitals. These include:
Mater Dei hospital is the main acute general hospital
with 972 beds. This hospital incorporates all specialised, ambulatory and
inpatient care.
Sir Anthony Mamo
Oncology Centre has
a capacity of 86 beds and offers oncology, haematology and palliative services.
Sir Paul Boffa
Hospital is a 63 bedded hospital offering dermatological services and long term care.
Gozo General Hospital provides public secondary care on
the island of Gozo. The hospital has 143 beds and provides general medicine and
surgical services, as well as orthopaedic, obstetrics and gynaecology services
and also has a renal unit.
Mount Carmel Hospital is a 501 bedded providing both
acute and chronic psychiatric care.
Karin Grech Hospital provides rehabilitation services to
patients referred to either from other public hospitals or from the community
by their general practitioners.

Elderly and
Community Care Services
The elderly and community care department
manages a number of state homes for older people, including the largest care
home St Vincent De Paul with a capacity of 1149 beds. The department is also
responsible for a number of services to support older people within the
