Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed

​As a Member State of the European Union, Malta is obliged to provide a National Contact Point on a 24/7 basis in case of direct or indirect risk to human health from food or feed which may be unfit for human consumption or injurious to health.  Said requirement is mentioned in Articles 50 – 52 ​of EC Regulation 178 of 2002​ and further amplified in CR 16 of 2011

For Malta, the duties of the National Contact point is vested in the Food Safety Commission, with the Director Environmental Health being the National Contact Person for RASFF.

In the past few years, RASFF related duties within the Environmental Health Directorate has been channelled to one unit thus improving on efficiency and harmonisation.  Malta is actively involved in RASFF notifications as can be seen from the below graph:


While most of the Information exchanged via RASFF is confidential, the consumers are informed in case of recalls which in Malta are first published on the Press Releases section of the Department of Information and then on the EHD’s Facebook and website​.  The European Commission also has a Consumer Portal on
