Psychiatrists and the Department of Psychiatry

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses. It takes many years of education and training to become a psychiatrist. He or she must graduate from college and then medical school, and go on to complete residency training in the field of psychiatry. Many psychiatrists undergo additional training so that they can further specialize in such areas as child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and/or psychoanalysis. This extensive medical training enables the psychiatrist to understand the body''s functions and the complex relationship between emotional illness and other medical illnesses (Information from American Psychiatric Association).

At the Department of Psychiatry, psychiatrists supported by psychiatric trainees are responsible for diagnosing psychiatric disorder, prescribing treatment and coordinating the multi disciplinary treatment and care management plan.

The Clinical and Para-clinical Services of Mount Carmel Hospital (MCH) currently consist of eleven consultant-led multidisciplinary clinical firms supported by nursing services, four para-clinical departments (occupational therapy, psychology, social work and physiotherapy), a pharmacy department and a laboratory.  The activities of some of these departments are outlined in other parts of the annual report.  Each of the eight consultant-led multidisciplinary firms offers general adult psychiatric services and a sub-speciality service as shown below.
