The Friends of Mount Carmel Hospital Society (formerly known as Friends of Attard Hospital Society) was set up in 1964, and its founder members were Dr.Joseph Pullicino, Fr.Dionisius Mintoff and Mr.Joe Borg Bonello. The first President of the Society was Ms.Feldman, wife of the ex-U.S. Ambassador to Malta, followed by Sir Anthony Mamo, Prof.J J Cremona, and Mr.Joe Borg Bonello, present incumbent.
From its onset the Society organizes annually a grand Christmas fair within the Hospital area with the specific aim of attracting people to the hospital and eradicate as far as possible the stigma against persons suffering from mental disorders and wrong perceptions about the hospital environment. In fact one basic attraction of the fair has always been and still is items of handcrafts made by the patients attending the Occupational Therapy Unit.
During the years the Society was instrumental towards the setting up of various projects, such as the Social Centre wherein during the day male and female patients mix up and socialise together, the Young People''''s Unit providing a safe and supportive environment for youngsters with psychiatric and emotional problems with the aim of rehabilitating them back in the community. The Society also donated funds for the purchase of: medical equipment, the re-construction of the Seclusion Unit and refurbishment of certain wards, kitchen units for various wards, gym equipment for the Occupational Therapy Unit, a coach and van with lifter for wheelchair cases as well as the furnishing of a community care flat in Mgarr, Malta.
On the occasion of Women''''s Day, the Society distribute carnations to all female patients and staff in appreciation of their dedicated work. Another initiative by the Society is to give prizes for the best decorated wards during Christmas.
In line with its mission a group of volunteers visit the patients'''' wards on a monthly basis and distributes by rotation, sweets, snacks, pastries and other refreshments. Besides, the Society assists financially or in kind needy cases and contributes towards holidaying of patients in Gozo or abroad.
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2009, the Society organized for the first time, a conference on Empowerment and the European Pact for Mental Health and Well-Being The main speaker was Ms Mary Van Dievel, Director Mental Health Europe, who was invited by our Society specifically for this occasion, and with the participation of the Hon.
