Geriatric Mental Health Service

The Geriatric Mental Health Service provides a broad spectrum of mental health consultation services and postgraduate training opportunities in psychogeriatric care across a number of hospital-based, nursing facilities, and community settings.

The psychogeriatric team provides an ongoing consultation-liaison service twice a week to both St Vincent de Paul Hospital (SVP) and Karen Grech Rehabilitation Hospital (KGRH), as well as contributing to ongoing mental health training and education to staff and service users in both facilities. To ensure continuity of care onsite for residents, the team also provides follow up psychogeriatric care in close liaison with the geriatric medicine service at SVP.

The service conducts weekly assessments of new referrals, two weekly psychogeriatric clinics for follow up care, and weekly psychotherapy sessions at the Medical Outpatient Clinic at KGRH focusing on mental health issues in older persons including depression, anxiety disorders, and behavioural and psychological manifestations of dementia.

The geriatric mental health team has implemented a weekly transition psychogeriatric clinic at the Qormi Mental Health Clinic to facilitate timely follow up of patients discharged from inpatient acute medical settings who are experiencing ongoing mental health problems requiring urgent follow up prior to referral to other community services, and a pilot psychogeriatric consultation service to older patients admitted to Mount Carmel Hospital.

We have also consolidated our weekly consultation service to the Dementia Intervention Team providing multidisciplinary complex case discussion as well as in-home consultation service to the Dementia Intervention Team.
