Intellectual Disability Services

The Intellectual Disability Speciality Services form part of our community Mental Health Services and offer care and treatment to those people who suffer from an intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviour, which covers many everyday social and practical skills.

This specialised team is made up of a number of mental health professionals including the consultant psychiatrist, doctors on rotation, a social worker, a psychiatric nurse, a psychologist and an occupational therapist all working together to provide a rounded and inclusive service to this cohort.  Through this multi-disciplinary team - bio, psycho and social  interventions are carried out according to each patient's needs based on the principles of person-centred care and goal-directed interventions all aimed at improving one's quality of life.

Specialised clinics for children/ adolescents and adults are held weekly at Children and Young People's Services (CYPS), St. Luke's Hospital (SLH) and Qormi Mental Health Clinic (QMHC) respectively, while monthly clinics  are held at Gozo General Hospital, Dar tal-Providenza and Casal Nuovo.

Although interventions are directed towards supporting persons in the community with the aim of preventing admissions into hospital, there are still some instances when the need for hospitalisation is felt. For this reason, the intellectual disability team also offers its services to in-patients at Mount Carmel Hospital with the aim of resettling back these patients in the community as soon as is reasonably possible. A social skills group is also held once a month.

Referrals to the Adult Intellectual Disability service at Qormi Mental Health Clinic can be done by general practioners, family doctors or doctors from primary care health centres.
