Perinatal Mental Health Service

The Perinatal Community Mental Health Service provides specialist care for women who are experiencing a range of mental health problems within the first year post-partum. We also offer pre conception counselling for women with severe or complex mental illness.

We care for women with a range of moderately to severe common post-partum mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and severe mental health such as bipolar affective disorder, psychosis and schizophrenia.

What does the service provide?
This service offers care and treatment including:
  1. Assessment and diagnosis of a range of mental health difficulties presenting in the first year post-partum.
  2. Advice on suitable medications especially if breastfeeding.
  3. Specialist psychological therapies.
  4. Promotion of early mother-infant relationship and attachment whilst mother’s mental health is recovering.
  5. Advice to others involved in your care such as family, carers and other professionals.
  6. Pre-conceptual counselling for women who have a diagnosis of severe mental illness.
  7. Solihull Approach Postnatal support groups.
