World Blood Donors Day

World Blood Donor Day, is celebrated on the 14th of June every year.  This day serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. A slogan/theme is selected every year, focusing on the value of donating blood to the patient, not only in saving a life but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.
This year's slogan "Donating Blood is an act of solidarity" highlights the contribution blood donors make to keep the world pulsating by saving lives.  Join the effort and saves lives!

The commemoration of World Blood Donor Day 2022 in Malta took place by lighting a number of structures, buildings and monuments with red lights. The three Presidential Palaces were lit for the occasion. The scope of lighting these buildings in red was:
🔴 To publicly thank and show appreciation to the thousands of blood donors who give blood on a voluntary and non-remunerated basis. Thanks to them, the National Health Services in Malta and Gozo continued without interruption, even during the pandemic. If this was not the case, patients would have suffered or come to a point of losing their life;
🔴 To encourage existing donors to continue giving blood on a regular basis; and
🔴 To create more awareness of the constant need for blood donations and encourage healthy people, particularly the youths, to come forward and start giving blood.
💓 Donating Blood is an act of solidarity.

The Auxillary Bishop of Malta Monsignor Joseph Curmi visited the blood collection center for the occasion of WBDD 2022.
