The nurse led Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention Clinic set up within Primary HealthCare under the auspices of the Renal Department at Mater Dei Hospital has been delivering a sterling service over the years from Kirkop, Qormi and Paola Health Centres.
The principal aim of this clinic is to educate and monitor patients with established early kidney disease and so preventing further deterioration of their condition.
The following referral criteria by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and endorsed by Profs E. Farrugia, Consultant Nephrologist, are being attached as a guide for referral to the CKDPC:
1. Patients with diabetes types 1 and 2 with micro/macro albuminuria.
2. Patients with hypertension and micro/macro albuminuria.
3. Patients with cardiovascular disease (ischemic heart disease, chronic heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, cerebral vascular disease) and diminished GFR and/or albuminuria.
4. Patients receiving drugs known to be potentially nephrotoxic.
5. Patients with structural renal tract disease, renal calculi, or prostate hypertrophy.
6. Patients with family history of stage 5 CKD or hereditary kidney disease.
