Weight Management Programme

Overweight and obesity are a growing concern among all age groups in the Maltese population. As from March, 2018, the Primary HealthCare has initiated a weight management service that focuses on the prevention and management of overweight and obesity.

The aim of this programme is to:

  • support and help overweight and obese individuals lose weight
  • prevent weight regain
  • avoid further weight gain for life
  • help meet a range of public health goals, including the reduction of major non-comminicable diseases associated with obesity, such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, osteoarthritis and certain types of cancers.

The programme consists of two sessions per week for a period of 12 weeks. Each session is of 2 hours duration, various topics relating to healthy nutrition and weight loss are presented and discussions take place in a group setting.

During each session, anthropometric measurements (weight and waist circumference) are taken for each participant in private. Individual progress is reported to enable the facilitator to monitor outcomes and advice accordingly. Handouts and printed material are distributed during sessions. Participants are also encouraged to do moderate intensity physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes five times a week. Sessions will take place in the health centres either morning or in the evening.

All individuals over 18 years of age, who have a body mass index (BMI) of >25kg/m2 can be referred. Clients suffering from a chronic condition might be referred to a dietician by the nutritionist.

Referrals by General Practitioners, Lifestyle clinic nurses and dieticians in Primary HealthCare and from Mater Dei Hospital are made by sending an email on nutritionist.phc@gov.mt. Clients can also self-refer by contacting their local Health Centre.
